DAMA (PIXIE PANOS FEMALE - DOB 04.02.15)
My family and I were interested in the German Show bloodlines and happened upon Creekside Kennels when I saw the Red and Black GSD, the richest Red I had ever seen. The personalities of the dogs were fun to watch in the owners home. My family found both Jen and Jay very pleasant people to work with and accommodating with the many schedules they keep. Both are very knowledgeable, caring, and pleasant. The fact they welcome a family into their home and are able to have the dogs loose with 3 strangers in the house tells a lot about the breeders.
We were able to look over the litter from Pixie/Panos 2015 and see each puppy within their pen. My children held each puppy and we spent a long time just getting to know each one. When we narrowed it down to three puppies, Jen and Jay allowed us to let them wander around a little bit to further evaluate our preferences. Luck would have it, we were able to get our favorite. " Sparkles " was a welcome addition to our family.
Dama (Sparkles) is derived from the German word "Dame" (pronounced Dama in German), meaning " lady " . She was a stubborn little lady at first... she decided early on she was more fond of our carpet than the grass, which presented the obvious potty training challenges . My goodness, she has a grand time when she's without supervision in our home, - so we think we'll continue to use the crate for a while. What we thought we saw glimpses of when selecting her from the litter continued to hold true as she grew... her personality allowed her to be just curious enough that she wouldn't be afraid to explore, yet she would never venture too far away and would come to us with every call.
Dama has a much larger "brother" in our 4 year old Anatolian Shepherd, Kopek. As it turns out, they are perfect playmates and s he allows him to help show her our family expectations. It's when she's playing with Kopek you see the pure determination and perseverance of the GSD . Though Kopek is quick to turn Dama on her back, she get's right back up and continues to "go after him" until he finally walks away. Dama is a stocky 70lb girl.
There are many little quirks my family finds funny... like when she crouches down like a cat, ready to pounce on Kopek from 20 feet away. Or when she gets in the car, her first action is to go from the back seat to the driver's seat, immediately. She wants to be with everyone, always, and will jog from one family member to another to make sure she doesn't miss anything. If people are on two floors, she lies in the middle landing. She likes to sit on the stairs too, butt down on upper step and front legs straight on the step below. It still makes my family laugh - though it's not something we encourage - Dama is a licker. No, not just a one lick and walk away. She has a CRAZY tongue!!!! Whether it's skin, clothing, or anything else, she will lick time and again and not stop until you ask her to. She has gained the nickname, "Lickster" and "Tongue". Dama will do anything and everything to find your face if it's at her level so she can lick you 20 times before you realize she's there. We play a game where we get down on the floor and cover our face and she will jump, pull, push, and shove her head into any opening she finds to get a lick in.
Dama is very sensitive to our families moods. It doesn't take but a look at her and she knows good from bad, right from wrong. Her ears immediately down and she lies down. She will rest her head on our feet and she will remain there until we console her for her wrong doing. Once she knows it's "OK" she immediately begins licking and it's fierce... we think it's her way of saying sorry. When a family member leaves in their vehicle, she sits by the door until she can no longer hear you driving away. She has a very loud, deep bark and is very quick to alert us to "danger", quicker than our Anatolian, but she's calm as soon as she knows our family is "good" with the intruder.
Smart?! Boy she is smart. Commands came very easily to Dama. She listens, even when distracted. While on walks and areas she knows she is free... she does not leave your eyesight. She's what we expected from Creekside Kennels, a perfect fit for our family.
Thank you Jen and Jay.
